History of Football

FIFA have claimed that the earliest forms of football date back to Ancient China, then known as "kick ball". The sport also has history in Ancient Greece, although the modern game itself doesn't have a classical history. Known as the FA Cup, it is now the world’s oldest football competition. The first official international match took place in the same year, with Scotland playing England in Glasgow. England is also the home to the world's first league, founded in Birmingham in 1888. The original format contained 12 clubs from the Midlands and Northern England, a far cry from the 92 clubs that currently make up the football league in England.

Did you know this about Football?

Four months prior to the 1966 FIFA World Cup in England, the trophy was stolen during a public exhibition at Westminster. The trophy was found a week later wrapped in newspaper at the bottom of a garden hedge in South London by a dog named Pickles. England went on to win the cup in 1966, but Brazil won the tournament in 1970, and as stipulated by Jules Rimet who oversaw the first World Cup in 1930, they were allowed to keep it in a cabinet in Rio de Janeiro. However, the cabinet was broken into in 1983 and the cup was stolen. It has never been recovered and many believe that it has been melted down and sold. Only one piece of the original cup has been found, the base which FIFA has kept in Zurich.

Arguably the best moment from the last 12 months of football came when Leicester City won the Premier League title in 2015/16. The Foxes had been battling relegation the season before, but under the stewardship of Claudio Ranieri and some excellent team spirit, they became the unlikeliest of Premier League champions.
